Abstract
Conceptual Metaphor, the process by which our mind is allowed to use some basic
ideas to explain technical terms that seem abstract to us, is a semantic theory by
George Lakoff and philosopher Mark L. Johnson (1970). This theory considers the
presence of conceptual metaphors in language in a systematic way. In this
perspective, considering the metaphor product of sociocognitive interactions, our
objective is to analyze the use of metaphors in Portuguese language textbooks. As
procedural support, we analyzed two textbooks from the collection Tecendo
Linguagens, of Portuguese language, one for the 6th grade and the other for the 7th
grade of elementary school, both authored by Tania Amaral Oliveira and Lucy
Aparecida Melo Araújo (2018). With this research, by approaching the theory of the
Conceptual Metaphor to teaching, we intend to emphasize its presence in textbooks
as a positive point for the teaching/learning process. The theoretical apparatus for this
study will be, initially, the Theory of Conceptual Metaphor, by Lakoff and Johnson
(1970), together with the theoretical precepts Theory of Relevance, by Sperber and
Wilson (2001) - a pragmatic-cognitive approach that deals with relative issues to
human cognition. The methodology that guides the study is of a bibliographic nature
that focuses on the presence of metaphors in textbooks.
