Abstract

Geoparks are territories with international relevance geoheritage, managed with a holistic concept of protection, education, and sustainable development. Considering the recent initiative for a geopark project in Prudentópolis, Paraná, and the establishment of an Interinstitutional Working Group in this direction, this thesis investigates the potential of this municipality to become a UNESCO Global Geopark, focusing on local geodiversity and geoheritage. Using inventory and quantification methods, as well as analysis of scientific publications, the importance of the territory and its geosites on both national and international levels was assessed. Fieldwork and bibliographic surveys allowed for the presentation of key sociocultural and environmental conditions that support the proposal. The SWOT analysis, together with the analysis of UNESCO documents for geoparks, enabled a discussion of the potentials and challenges for the application, as well as suggestions for the management of the territory considering the area's specific characteristics. A total of 26 geosites were inventoried and quantified, which, supported by national and international publications, highlight the relevance of the local geoheritage. Notable cultural heritage, and tourism and educational potential are favorable points for the initiative. However, areas requiring attention were identified before a possible application. Degrading activities in the territory, including tobacco cultivation, livestock farming (which is a major contributor to the deforestation of the Atlantic Forest in Paraná), and the installation of Small Hydropower Plants (SHPs), may impact certain geosites. Additionally, for Prudentópolis to meet UNESCO's prerequisites, it is necessary to develop activities with a greater focus on the abiotic environment and promote educational actions targeted at various audiences. Increasing visibility, strengthening networking, enhancing infrastructure, and involving the local community are also essential actions. In conclusion, the investigation revealed significant potential for Prudentópolis to become a UNESCO Global Geopark. However, the success of the application will depend on the municipality's ability to address the identified areas for improvement. With a continuous commitment to conservation, education, and sustainable development, combined with the implementation of effective strategies to overcome its shortcomings, the municipality of Prudentópolis will be prepared to achieve global recognition as a prominent UNESCO geopark.
