Abstract
Latin American textile industry have been strongly impacted by textile manufacturing
companies of China and India, for this reason is crucial the development of highly
differentiated products, with new value added such as hydrophobicity and selfcleaning. Materials with these properties can be obtained through the modification of
its surface. The present master dissertation was used stearic acid and silica
nanoparticles for the modification of cotton textiles through dip-coating. Likewise,
different variables were studied for the application of the coating, these were:
concentration of chemical compounds, immersion time, temperature and fixation time.
They were obtained highly hydrophobic and self-cleaning cotton fabrics with a contact
angle of 141º. Likewise, drops of water of 100 µL roll easily when the surface is inclined
27º. The results obtained in this work are highly promising for the development of new
properties in textiles. Additional studies are needed to evaluate the coating and the
application conditions using the equipment and techniques characteristic of the textile
industry.
