Uma leitura distópica de Graça Infinita de David Foster Wallace

Abstract

O presente trabalho objetiva realizar uma leitura distópica da obra Graça Infinita do autor David Foster Wallace, publicada em 1996. A ideia originou-se a partir da identificação de uma lacuna nos estudos teóricos - críticos de Graça Infinita que por vezes traziam o termo distopia enquanto característico do romance sem, no entanto, especificar as características que tornaram possível tal caracterização. Portanto, compreendendo essa lacuna no que diz respeito aos estudos do romance de Wallace, a pesquisa tem como propósito elencar as características que tornam possível a leitura da obra como ficção distópica. Para tanto, teóricos como Tom Moylan (2000, 2013), Rafaela Baccolini (2013), Keith M. Booker (1994), Vita Fortunati (2000) entre outros teóricos da área, serão contemplados no intuito de apresentar uma fundamentação teórica no que diz respeito às características centrais da ficção distópica, abrangendo definições que se estendem até o conceito de distopia crítica. Ainda, o conceito de neodistópico, elaborado por Felipe Benicio (2023), também será discorrido uma vez que dialoga com as perspectivas de análise propostas dentro da leitura de Graça Infinita, particularmente no que diz respeito à subversão de elementos consolidados na tradição distópica e nas novas proposições de leitura para textos do gênero. Na sequência, um capítulo será dedicado ao conceito de hedonismo, uma vez que a obra evidencia uma relação problemática com os prazeres imediatos. Estas questões serão trabalhadas a partir de uma perspectiva distópica, considerando as implicações que tais anseios podem suscitar na sociedade. Depois, os principais núcleos e personagens que os estruturam, serão analisados a partir das concepções previamente discutidas, mantendo no horizonte de análise as perspectivas que se apoiam na tradição distópica e aquelas que transgridem aspectos consolidados, propondo então uma leitura da obra que pode constituir uma inovação no gênero distópico. A contribuição desta pesquisa reside em instigar novos trabalhos referente a obra de Foster Wallace além de possibilitar investigações quanto a novas perspectivas de análise na distopia.This research aims to propose a dystopian reading of the novel Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace, published in 1996. The idea came from the identification of a gap in the theoretical-critical literature on Infinite Jest, which occasionally refers to the term “dystopia” as characteristic of the novel, but does not specify the features that enable such a characterization. Therefore, comprehending this gap in the studies of Wallace’s work, the research seeks to identify the elements that make it possible to interpret the novel as dystopian fiction. For that, scholars such as Tom Moylan (2000, 2013), Raffaella Baccolini (2013), Keith M. Booker (1994), Vita Fortunati (2000), among others, are consulted in order to present a theoretical framework regarding the central features of dystopian fiction, covering definitions that extend to the concept of critical dystopia. Furthermore, the concept of neodistópico, elaborated by Felipe Benicio (2023), will also be discussed, as it aligns with the analytical perspectives proposed in the reading of Infinite Jest, particularly regarding the subversion of consolidated elements in the dystopian tradition and the new interpretive proposals for works of the genre. Later, a chapter is dedicated to the concept of hedonism, given that the novel highlights a problematic relationship with immediate pleasures. These issues will be examined from a dystopian perspective, considering the implications such desires may have on society. Finally, the main narrative cores and the characters who structure them are analyzed based on the previously discussed conceptions, maintaining a horizon that includes both perspectives rooted in the dystopian tradition and those that transgress established aspects, thus proposing a reading of the work that may constitute an innovation within the dystopian genre. This study contribution resides on the encouragement of new research on Wallace’s work and also open for new perspectives on the analysis of dystopian studies.
