Abstract
The objective of the thesis was to analyze the symbolic system fostered and that fostered
football practices and the process of structuring the habitus of Mirante Esporte Clube players
in Ponta Grossa – Paraná (2013-2021). To this end, ethnography was used, as it enables
reflection on the social group studied, through its own “point of view” on the world, based on
the interpretation of its symbolic practices. Between Special Division Amateur Championship
and Master Amateur Championship, from 2013 to 2021, Mirante E. C. was accompanied in the
13 competitions in which the team was registered. In addition to field trips on game days, the
club's players, managers and fans were observed at other times, such as: in “peladas”
(recreational games); in the circles of sociability; at commemorative club festivities
(anniversaries or veterans gathering events); in reform efforts; board meetings; in addition to
birthday parties, barbecues and other private celebrations of agents involved with Mirante E.
C., when invited. For the presentation of the results, the Multipaper format or Scandinavian
model was adopted, which is characterized by the presentation of the study through a collection
of articles. During this process, seven articles were developed. The first three are characterized
by an effort "off the field", through which states of knowledge of academic production on
amateur football in Brazil (through BDTD theses and dissertations) and in different parts of the
world (through from the Scopus database) and a literature review on the contemporary
challenges of ethnographic research. Then, the four articles of the second part of the thesis
directly address the issues emerging from the ethnographic descriptions carried out in the
amateur championships of Ponta Grossa, such as: feelings of identity with the club, expressed
through the conflicting relationships between different boards; the use of football capital outside
the field, in labor relations or electoral politics; the importance of soccer practices in the
trajectory of an agent who has experienced the sport in its different dimensions; and the
dilemmas and conflicts faced by football practitioners in a pandemic. It is inferred that since its
industrial genesis, amateur football practice had and still has the ability to be converted into
economic, cultural, social or symbolic capital, applicable beyond the geographic lines of the
fields. For this reason, there is a need to think about football capital. In the Ponta Grossa context,
between the memories of the veterans' past and the subjective (almost mystical) hope that
everything is possible through a group that recognizes itself as a family, the symbols, norms
and laws that govern this social space continue to be reproduced. , symbolically legitimizing
amateur football as an indispensable practice in the daily lives of these social agents. Thus, their
ways of seeing, feeling and acting on the world, that is, their habitus, are directly related to the
laws and logic of the Ponta Grossa amateur football field.
