Abstract
The only two men’s FIFA World Cup realized in national territory in 1950 and 2014, resulted in defeat, elevated to the same level of tragedy, failure, fatality – known as the most remarkable in national team and Brazilian soccer. Because they are ample moments of significance, the participation of Brazilian team in World Cup are narrativized by journalism that builds and circulates a series of value, ideas and senses that cross Brazilian society. In this scenario, it stands out the representativeness and relevance of narratives built by “O Globo” newspaper, given its historical significance and status in editorial market and in Brazilian society. The following questions emerged from these reflections as research problem: How does O Globo build the configuration of narratives about defeat? What are the structuring elements of O Globo’s journalistic narrative and the full significance of this narrative? How does the metanarratives – moral fund meanings – about the defeat in 1950 and 2014 come together and/or distance? The general objective is delimited to investigate the configuration, the structuring elements and the significance integrated to defeat in narratives of O Globo newspaper in FIFA’s World Cups of 1950 and 2014, their discrepancies and congruences, from pragmatic narratological analysis. For this, it is adopted a qualitative research, of a descriptive and explanatory nature, which uses the Pragmatic Analysis of Journalistic Narrative and of the Protocol of Analysis of the Journalistic Coverage for investigation of 1.349 journalistic texts from “O Globo” about the Brazilian team and the FIFA World Cups in 1950 and 2014. After analyzing the texts, it was found that in the story about the Maracanazzo, the death of soccer and funeral atmosphere are due to and unimagined defeat, given the conviction of victory. While the narrative of Mineiratzen deals with the death of soccer due to unimagined defeat, given the expressiveness of the score and the loss of singularity of Brazilian soccer. The defeats were built narratively as defeats for itself: for optimism and presumption; for delay and loss of identity. The lessons offered a pedagogical sense to defeat, in order to reestablish the national soccer and revive the Brazilian team – if in 1950 the singularity of the soccer practiced in the country is strengthened as emblem of the “being Brazilian”, in 2014 is deconstructs the perception of “Soccer Country”, almost because of the loss of this identity. The conclusions lead to the understanding that the narratives signify defeat within habitual and familiar frameworks, maintaining them as part of common deposit already built and leading to a kind of recurrence, based on consensual signification of defeat (symbolic universe shared in mimesis I). Therefore, the defeat is signified as social death caused by Brazilians themselves, seen as learning that would allow the revival of national soccer.
