História, memória e protagonismos: A Associação Reviver de Assistência ao Portador de HIV e a resposta do Munícipio de Ponta Grossa à AIDS

Abstract

The object of this dissertation is the history, memory and protagonism of the Associação Reviver de Assistência ao Portador de HIV (Association Reviver of Assistance to the HIV carrier) in the municipality of Ponta Grossa – Paraná, in an articulated way to the historiography of AIDS in Brazil and the emergence of third sector movements after the country’s re-democratization, specifically from 1995. The realization of the present study is justified in that it offers a perspective on the responses and protagonism in ralation to AIDS in Ponta Grossa context. Its general aim is to contribute to the historiography of the AIDS disease, adding to it, based on research on a Paraná municipality of medium-sized in Brazil – Ponta Grossa –, the history and memory of a civil society entity that, founded in the mid-years 1990, dedicated itself to facing the disease in its territory. Its specific aims include presenting some aspects of the history of diseases and, more specifically, AIDS in Brazil; to present elements for the debate on the relationship between State and civil society in order to contribute to the subsequent presentation and problematization of historical aspects of the Associação Reviver de Assistência ao portador de HIV (Association Reviver of Assistance to the HIV carrier) as a non-governmental response to AIDS in the municipality of Ponta Grossa between 1995 and 2019; to describe some aspects of the memory of subjects who work and worked in Reviver. It is an interdisciplinary investigation, which articulated to the historiography of disease to the critical perspective of the new social movements, consisting in an exploratory and qualitative case study that used documentary research and field research. The results point to elements that bring the experience of the NGO and the municipality with AIDS closer to the national scenario, as well as reveal some particularities articulated to the regional context.
