Abstract

The aim of this clinical trial was to evaluate the bleaching efficacy (BE) of in-office bleaching was applied using different application tips (conventional vs. attached brush). Forty-eight patients were selected (split-mouth), one to receive bleaching with a conventional tip application and one with an attached brush tip. The bleaching procedure was performed with HP 35. The color was evaluated at the beginning, weekly for two weeks, one month and twelve months post bleaching with a Vita Easyshade spectrophotometer (ΔE*ab, ΔE00 and ΔWID) and with Vita scales (ΔSGU). The absolute risk and intensity of tooth sensitivity (TS) were recorded using the Visual Analogue Scale. The equivalence of BE was analyzed using the two one-sided t-tests for paired samples and to detect BE between groups paired using Student's t test. The absolute risk of TS was evaluated using the McNemar test, and the TS intensity was measured with the paired t test ( = 0.05). For all color measurement tools, significant and equivalent BE was observed in both groups (p > 0.57). The absolute and intensity of TS was lower (58%; 95%CI 44-71%) for brush tip when compared to conventional tip (81%; 95%CI 68-90%), with an odds ratio of 0.32 (0.13 to 0.81). Using an attached brush tip, which keeps the bleaching gel layer thin and homogeneous, showed the same BE as a conventional tip. However, for the attached brush tip, there was a notable reduction in TS.
