Abstract
The choice of material for restorative and prosthetic procedures in subgingival or regions near the edges of the gums should consider biofilm formation and blood adhesion capacity. The accumulation of microorganisms in this area may encourage the development of periodontal disease. Moreover, the initial blood adhesion is essential for healing post periodontal therapy. This study evaluated superficial
characteristics, biofilm formation (Escherichia coli) and blood elements adhesion in dental materials. Evaluation of materials Acrylic Resin (RA) (n = 20); Composite resin (RC) (n = 20); Self-curing glass ionomer (IA) (n = 20); Light-curing glass ionomer (IF) (n = 20) in a time of 1 year (Group 1) and 24 hours (Group 2) of storage in distilled water were performed to biofilm formation analysis. Initial characterization:
Microhardness Vickers (MV), Atomic Force Microscopy (surface roughness) (AFM), scanning electron microscopy with field emission source (SEM-FEG). The samples were divided into control group (n = 10) and experimental group (biofilm formation) (n = 10). New ratings: MV; MFA; FEG-SEM - Qualitative assessment;Spectrophotometer and Count UFC/mL analysis of biofilm formation. Evaluation of
blood adhesion for Index of the Blood Elements Adhesion (IAES) – FEG-SEM in RA (n=15); RC (n=15); IF (n=15) and IA (n=15). In the group 1 the greater biofilm formation was in RA*, whereas in the group 2 was found in IF. This last material showed the greater blood adhesion. Whereas the lowest blood adhesion was
observed in the RA. It concludes that the surface characteristics of restorative materials may act of isolated manner, without affect significantly the biofilm formation, besides that, tested materials showed the blood elements adhesion of similar manner. (* Statiscally significant difference p<0.05).
