Abstract
In this work we present a proposal for a Potentially Meaningful Teaching Unit (UEPS)
on the theme of refraction of light in transparent media, in the context of geometric
optics, based on the principles of the Theory of Meaningful Learning (TAS) by David
Ausubel. The UEPS was applied and analyzed in a third-grade high school class, in a
school in the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba - PR, based on the assumption that the
experimental activities developed, applied and evaluated in the light of the TAS
principles, could contribute to alleviate some of the learning problems encountered by
the teacher in the teaching of physics regarding the content of light refraction. To
investigate the results and search for evidence of learning, conceptual maps were
used, indicated as important methodological tools in the process of differentiated and
progressive assessment. In the different moments of the UEPS, there was a great
involvement of students in the process, individually and in groups, and an increase in
the complexity of their mental and conceptual maps, factors that can be read as
indications that the experimental activities contributed as facilitators of teaching,
motivating and mobilizing the students and showing themselves as instruments to
support the teacher in his search for differentiated and attractive classes.
