Abstract
This research explores the fields of Cultural Journalism and historical memory,
investigating how the National Amateur Theater Festival (FENATA), held in the city of
Ponta Grossa, Paraná, has been covered in the local newspapers. It identifies the
journalistic coverage given to the festival editions in 1973 (1st), 1982 (10th), 1992
(20th), 1997 (25th), 2002 (30th), 2012 (40th), and 2022 (50th), and its implications for
Cultural Journalism in Ponta Grossa. The theoretical framework is based on studies of
the field, culture, and cultural studies, grounded in the works of Pierre Bourdieu (1987),
Ana Carolina Escosteguy (2018), and Sérgio Luiz Gadini (2009). The methodological
approach adopted is qualitative, based on documentary research, in which a
quantitative survey of the mentioned cultural journalistic product was conducted. This
research includes 157 editions of newspapers documented in 1,525 digital images,
demonstrating how the scheduling of each decade’s commemorative editions took
place, relating the highlights and editorial patterns given to the festival, both in front-
page headlines and the layout quadrants used by the editorial teams, thus highlighting
the characteristics of the journalistic material. It was observed that the thematization
and scheduling of FENATA, within the scope of the journalistic content found, are
characterized by the use of the informative genre, represented mainly by news, notes,
and event programming. A complete absence of specialized theater criticism was also
noted, considering the lack of space for texts with analysis and cultural criticism of the
event. Finally, it was observed that the publications, for the most part, result from
“suggested agendas” designed by the press office of the event’s promoting
organization, in publications institutionally constructed to offer an entertainment
agenda to the public.
