Abstract

This research aims to map the formats that comprise the police newscast Tribuna da Massa - Ponta Grossa (PR), broadcast by TV Guará. This contributes to the understanding of how police news is constructed in a regional context. The investigation seeks to go beyond traditional debates on sensationalism and professional ethics, starting with an analysis of the characteristics of television news production. The theoretical and methodological foundation is based on the contributions of authors who study journalistic events, the representation of police news on television, and television journalism. The central hypothesis guiding this research was materialized in the empirical phase through a qualitative tool, using the “addressing mode” (Gomes, 2007) as methodological inspiration for a description and interpretative analysis of formats. The sample consisted of more than 100 news items broadcast throughout 2024, in specific weeks of February, May, August, and November. The chosen methodological framework includes an analysis of the social, historical, and cultural context of the newscast and the broadcaster, as well as a description of aspects of the news structure, such as sources, location, and journalistic resources employed. By describing the typology of these formats, the results reveal that police news is composed of different layers and complexities that are part of the news construction process, going beyond the reductionist view of effects and behaviors often associated with this type of news coverage.
