O sacerdote de Éris a serviço da ordem: a trajetória intelectual de Emir Calluf na Curitiba do pós-1964

Abstract

The present dissertation has as its object of study the intellectual trajectory of the priest and psychologist Emir Calluf (1929-1993) from Curitiba, with special emphasis on the period when he acted as a priest of the Catholic Church (1959-1977). From this time frame, we seek to contemplate as guiding axes the ways in which the priest acted in the Curitiba society after 1964, highlighting his position in favor of a particular social conjuncture, legitimized by the military government at the time. Thus, themes around social normatization, anti-communism, and the use of psychology as a ratification tool are significant when considering this trajectory. Inserting the research in the perspective of intellectual history, we used as theoretical reference some of the concepts of the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, such as field, habitus, and capitals, in order to understand the structural elements of this trajectory, the networks of sociability to which he belonged, and the processes that led him to take certain positions. Similarly, we used the concepts of representation and appropriation from the French historian Roger Chartier, aiming to understand the means of action used by the priest. Besides the theoretical reference and specific bibliography, the work relied on an extensive collection of sources, including articles written by Emir Calluf in the newspaper Diário do Paraná and accessed at the Hemeroteca Digital Brasileira, some of his works among the extensive bibliography written by the priest, as well as documents and dossiers belonging to the Serviço Nacional de Informação (National Information Service) found at the Arquivo Nacional (National Archive) site. The first chapter aimed at covering a space-time contextualization in which Emir Calluf was inserted, as well as his family origins and intellectual formation. In the second chapter, we tried to discuss his means of acting as a priest, the public to which he addressed himself, as well as the discursive tools used as a way to justify his social and political position. In the third chapter, we discuss the ideological performance of the priest, understanding the uses of psychology, as well as the ruptures established within the religious field, reflected in the practices of combat and denunciation established by the priest to a layer of the Catholic hierarchy. Through the analysis of the sources and from the theoretical and bibliographical referential, it was possible to understand Emir Calluf's performance as an agent of legitimization of a certain value system and of a social framework postulated from the military government imposed after the coup of 1964. We noticed that the priest was aligned to the legitimating precepts of such system, whose performance had the objective of justifying such conjuncture, fighting divergences and legitimating his position. Finally, we understand the representative thought of forms of appropriation of elements that predominate sometimes in a latent form, sometimes in a manifest form in our society.
