Abstract
This dissertation aims to analyze the main characters, the grandparents and the
children, the interaction, the affection relation between grandparents and
grandchildren, thinking about how ancestry is connected to this aspect in two works
of children and teenage literature with African and Afro-Brazilian themes: "Sona
contos africanos desenhados na areia" by Rogério Andrade Barbosa and "Black
power of Akin", by Kiusam de Oliveira. From the category interaction, presented by
Silva (2022), we analyze the relationship of affection between grandparents and
grandchildren, thinking about how ancestry is linked to this aspect. To situate the
object of the research, we delineated the historical context of children and teenage
literature and its influences, especially in Brazil, and discussed the increase of black
characters in literary works. A survey was made of theses and dissertations that
approach the "African and Afro-Brazilian themes" and "black characters" in the post-
graduation courses at UEPG. The thematic analysis of the works "O Black power de
Akin", by Kiusam de Oliveira, and "Sona contos africanos desenhados na areia", by
Rogério Andrade Barbosa, will be based on three categories listed by Silva (2022): I)
Characterization of the central characters, observing the central conflict of the plots,
since the protagonists' actions are fundamental to their constitution; II) Space
described in the texts. Next, the interaction, which is the main objective of the
dissertation, which will observe the affection relationship of the grandfather and
grandson. Finally, we analyze illustrations from the books, highlighting how the
characters are represented in a non-stereotypical way. The research methodology is
qualitative and is based on the reading and analysis of the books, in order to verify
how the concepts are manifested in the text and how meanings are constructed. To
this end, we will use the propositions of: Oliveira (2021) for ancestry; Lajolo and
Zilberman (2007) for contextualization of the object of study children and youth
literature; Debus (2017); Araújo (2017, 2018, 2019); Araújo e Silva (2020); Araújo e
Silva (2012); Araújo; Oliveira (2021) Jovino (2006); Oliveira (2003, 2010); Gouvêa
(2005); Hall (2016) for the concept of stereotype. We found from the analyses, works
that present the black child as the protagonist of their history, revealing the ancestry
and tradition that is part of the lives of children and their grandparents. As a result of
the research, it was observed that in both works, the grandparents play an important
role in the development of the children; they welcome, give affection, love, and
attention to their grandchildren. The children feel this love, this patience, and, as a
result, they show a look of enchantment, admiration for the teachings, strengthening
the relationship with their grandparents.
