Abstract

This dissertation aims to study the novel A costa dos murmúrios, by the Portuguese writer Lídia Jorge, from the spatial component. The acuity with which the fiction writer (re)creates the different spaces that make up the human being, whether empirical or not, is visible in the set of works by the aforementioned author. In the novel object of this study, spatial relations affect the reader in a mosaic of colors, sounds and smells that allow breathing the work in order to get close to the sensory experience of the narrators. Since space is responsible for giving space to the space of being, this research explores places of (re)existence of the subject who experienced the colonial war in Mozambique: house, sea and hotel. The study demonstrates that the progressive complexification of the construction of the individual is (de)dependent on the space in which one is to be. In order to present a serious and up-to-date paper about the relevance of the spatial component for the construction of subjectivity, the discussion takes shape from the studies of Gastón Bachelard, Ozíris Borges Filho and Luis Alberto Brandão, distinguished scholars in relation to the subject dealt with in this article.
