Abstract

The internet has become part of the daily life of our society and the “memes”, exclusive to the internet, has become very common. These “memes” are viral posts that are on all social media, and can address the most diverse subjects, among them math. In this dissertation, we have as a guiding question “What is the social representation of mathematics presented by posts on Twitter?”, And as objectives: point out the nature of the memes content on mathematics explained in posts by users on the social network Twitter , Document the speeches present in the posts on Twitter about math from a sample of these; Evidence what types of speeches are most present; Identify, through the speeches, what is the social representation of mathematics presented in this posts; and sensitize the teachers to these images of mathematics, so that they understands and manages to deal with it, without reinforcing or ignoring it. The data collected were taken from the social media Twitter, searching for the word “mathematics”. This research was based on LÉVY's (1992, 1996, 1998 and 1999) view on cyberspace and cyberculture, also the research by HORTA (2016) and RECUERO (2009) on social networks and memes as language, the text of HORTA (2016) and CORTÁZAR (2013) in a discussion on humor and RAMOS 'research (2003) on social representations of mathematics and its dimensions. The research emerging shows that posts, and especially memes, have a very strong inclination towards negative feelings about mathematics, reinforcing the stereotype of difficult and unreachable mathematics.
