Abstract

Nursing professionals may be more susceptible to colonization by multidrug-resistant microorganisms. For this reason, being aware of their condition as a carrier can lead to changes in care practice. This research verified the presence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus spp. (MRS) and carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteria (CPE), in the saliva of nurses and nursing technicians working in the adult and neonatal Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in a University Hospital in southern Brazil. Therefore, 81 professionals were included in the first collection (T0). However, in the second collection (T1 - three months after the first collection) there were only 56 volunteers. Initially, there was a form for data collection. This questionnaire evaluated data on the main reservoirs of multi-resistant microorganisms, places that may present greater contamination, and the main measures of biosafety. The volunteers participating in the research, 74.1% were female, with an average age of 34.1 years, 71.6% worked in the adult ICU, and 28.4% in the neonatal ICU. Moreover, 70.4% of the volunteers did not work at another health institution. It was collected 3 ml of the saliva and sent for microbiological analysis, trying to identify MRS and CPE through phenotypic evaluation. It was recognized as prevalence of SRM of 1.23% in T0 and 7.14% in T1. The CPE prevalence was 1.23% in T0 and it was not possible to identify in the second moment. All professionals were considered transient carriers, as they only presented one positive sample. Despite the low prevalence identified in this study, it was possible to identify the presence of MRS and CPE in saliva of these professionals. The knowledge of the carrier state can contribute to the improvement of prevention practices to control the spread of multi-resistant microorganisms.
