Abstract

There is a relation between negative aspects of the work environment in health professionals, low quality of care and increased Burnout Syndrome (BS). The concept of quality of work life (QWL) is multidimensional, being composed of physical, technological, psychological and social dimensions related to work. Cross-sectional correlational study, which aimed to identify associations between QLW and BS in health professionals: nursing technicians and higher education professionals working in a university hospital. For data collection, a self-administered questionnaire with questions for sample knowledge and two specific instruments were included: the TQWL-42 (Total Quality of Work Life) to assess QWL and OLBI (Oldenburg Burnout Inventory) to assess BS. 325 individuals met the criteria to the final sample, with prevalence of the feminine sex, married and who work in system of shifts. There was a significant association between all spheres of QWL and BS for those who work during the day. Professionals with longer service time showed greater perception of BS and professionals who participate in Residency Programs are more prone to exhaustion when compared to professionals with different employment bonds. The association between QWL and BS was significant in this study, showing that low scores in the QVT spheres have a negative influence on the exhaustion and disengagement domains of BS. Thus, the better the perception of QWL, the lower the perception of BS. Future studies should take place to assess the effectiveness of strategies for promoting QWL and preventing BS in this population.
