Abstract

Since the appearance of SARS-CoV-2, the population corresponding to children and adolescents has behaved differently from adults, regarding the pathophysiology of the disease, with lower contamination rates, fewer exacerbations and consequently fewer deaths. With the pandemic, it was necessary to structure a new service profile, where, based on a collection of data, the profile of care provided to children and adolescents at a University Hospital in Paraná was researched. Therefore, the objective of this work was to analyze the profile of hospital care provided to pediatric patients admitted in the pre-pandemic periods and during the COVID-19 pandemic at the Hospital Universitário Materno Infantil de Ponta Grossa. This study is characte- rized as a retrospective cross-sectional study with data collected from electronic medical records. To this end, firstly, the pre-pandemic profile was outlined, with data collected from January to December 2019. Subsequently, the first and second years of Covid-19, referring to the transition period January to December 2020 and to the pandemic installed, itself, from January to December 2021. The chi-square method was used to verify the association of the dependent variable, the years of the re- search, and the other variables considered independent. Data analysis demonstrated that there was an increase in the number of hospitalizations and that the pandemic progressed concomitantly, despite respiratory complaints appearing in only 35.65% of those hospitalized in the three years of the study. Of the children studied, 46.3% of the sum of the percentages from 2019, 2020 and 2021 required support in a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, but the death outcome decreased over the years from 2.71% in 2019 to 1.02% in 2020 and 0.50% in 2021. Therefore, it was concluded that the profile of services provided was independent of the pandemic.
