Abstract

The aim of the dissertation is to characterize the history of Brazilian journalism through the biographies of journalists or press professionals published between 1998 and 2018 in university publishers. For this, we used the qualitative approach in a sample of eight biographical books signed by journalists. In the reading of Com Clarice (SANT'ANNA; COLASANTI, 2013), José Mendonça: A vida revelada (FRICHE; GUIMARÃES; FARIA, 2009), Juca Kfouri: O militante da notícia (ALENCAR, 2006), Machado de Assis: Um gênio brasileiro (PIZA, 2005), Sutilezas femininas de Palmyra Wanderley (CARVALHO, 2012), Tarquínio: Começar de novo (MOTTA, 2012), Tarso de Castro: Editor de “O Pasquim” (BERTOL, 2001) and Tinhorão: O legendário ( LORENZOTTI, 2010), there are three elements that could contribute to the historical characterization of Brazilian journalism - journalistic environment, spaces of belonging and legacy of the biographer - which served as categories (BAUER, 2000) of analysis. The present master's research also identifies a total of 29 biographies signed by Brazilian journalists in the period from 1998 to 2018, observes the relationship between life stories and journalism and this, with the biographical segment. In addition to that, presents the evolution of the publishing industry in Brazil, from the 1920s, when Monteiro Lobato transformed the book object into merchandise. Furthermore, supported by the Biographical Journalism method (VILAS BOAS, 2008), the results indicate that the eight books selected for the sample use a laudatory language, close to a tribute; denoting a regional character, a characteristic associated with the profile of university publishers (BUFREM, 2001); they have a protagonist whose history is the guiding thread of the narrative and they have non chronological time marks. In conclusion, the genre Biography is a valid tool for the rescue and preservation of a story for Brazilian journalism.
