| dc.description.resumo | Cancer is a set of diseases characterized by the uncontrolled multiplication of cells. Cancer cells interact with the individual’s immune system, which attacks them as a defense mechanism of the body. However, this interaction alone does not guarantee the patient’s recovery, making the application of one or more treatments necessary. One of the traditional treatments for the disease is chemotherapy, which uses medications to eliminate tumor cells. However, studies show that mutations can occur in cancer cells that are sensitive to the treatment, resulting in resistant cells. Furthermore, chemotherapy also acts on immune cells and affects normal cells of the considered tissue or organ, as there is still no way to target only the tumor cells. Another treatment that can be applied to the patient is immunotherapy, which utilizes the patient’s own immune system to fight the tumor. Additionally, cancer treatments can be used in combination; for example, it is possible to use chemotherapy and immunotherapy together in the same protocol to combat the disease. Aiming for a greater understanding of how cancer cells interact with the elements involved in their growth or remission, mathematical models have been used to describe the aspects of these interactions among cell populations, as well as the treatment used, in order to study the dynamics of tumor growth. In this work, we present three mathematical models for tumor growth. We analyze a model where we consider the interactions between cell populations and chemotherapy as a treatment, including drug resistance. We consider a continuous treatment of chemotherapeutic agents. We introduce a fractional operator to the model and analyze how the order of the fractional operator can change the dynamics of tumor growth. Next, we study a model with the introduction of a fractal operator. In this case, we consider three different chemotherapy protocols, evaluating different infusion values for each protocol. We made comparisons to determine which protocol and chemotherapeutic infusion rate is the most efficient in suppressing tumor cells. We also analyzed the effects of the fractal operator’s order on the model. Finally, we study a model for non-small cell lung cancer. In this case, in addition to chemotherapy, we consider immunotherapy. We analyze how different chemotherapy protocols combined with immunotherapy result in the suppression of non-small cell lung cancer. | |
