Reflexões sobre a emergência de um modelo caótico de desempenho na linguagem.

Abstract

The pioneering article by Larsen-Freeman (1997) in which is discussed the view of the second language acquisition (SLA) process as a chaotic system (CS), the author emphasizes the importance and the need to develop a dynamic model of performance, considering the non-linearity of the process that implies performance as a CS. In the same way, Borges and Paiva (2011) and Borges (2015), when developing the Complex Approach to Language Teaching and Learning (CALTL), reinforce the importance of focusing on performance and no longer on competence in the teaching and learning an additional language (AL) process, as in other approaches. Within this perspective, this work has as its main goal the study and reflection on what Larsen-Freeman (1997) postulated as a dynamic model of performance. Therefore, we propose a theoretical-reflective study of different trends that discuss performance (even if using other similar terminologies) in the large field of Linguistics, Applied Linguistics and Complex Applied Linguistics (BORGES, 2021). We start from the understanding of a chaotic performance of language, as a CS, to, only later, reflect about the possible emergence of this performance and its manifestations. We understand that this research is important since one of the elements considered essential in CALTL - focus on the individual performance of the learner to achieve language skills - has not yet had a broad development, as there are no in-depth discussions and reflections on the dynamic performance model, already emphasized by Larsen-Freeman, within the studies of Applied Linguistics in the terms proposed in this work.
