Abstract

This dissertation investigates the relationship between the point of articulation (AP) and the construction of semantic meanings in the Brazilian Sign Language (Libras), considering the central role of this parameter in the visuospatial organization of the language. The research starts from the conception of language as a social and interactional practice and seeks to understand how the location of the signal in the body can influence, distinguish or reinforce meanings in Libras. The question that guides the study is: how does the PA influence the semantic aspects of Libras signals and what patterns can be identified in this interface? To answer this question, we established as a general objective: to analyze how PA influences the construction of meanings in Libras, from the verification of visuospatial phonological patterns. From a quantitative and qualitative approach, based on the collection and annotation of a signaled corpus, through the ELAN software, the signals were analyzed according to phonological descriptions present in the classical and contemporary literature of sign languages, in addition to being grouped by semantic domains. In the results we identified that there were 438 occurrences of PAs, 300 semantic annotations, adding with the other elements analyzed 1.556 checks. In the qualitative question, it partially exerts influence on the categorization and differentiation of meanings, demonstrating that certain body regions have greater recurrence in specific semantic fields. It is concluded that understanding the interface between phonology and semantics in Libras contributes to the advancement of the linguistic description of the language, as well as to pedagogical and training practices that involve its teaching and dissemination.
