Abstract

Patients may report discomfort during non-surgical periodontal instrumentation. Although there have been studies comparing invasive and non-invasive techniques during instrumentation, no study has compared a computerized technique with an anesthetic gel developed for dental use. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the perception of pain during periodontal instrumentation using a computerized anesthetic technique compared to a non-invasive anesthetic technique using lidocaine/prilocaine gel. A total of 76 individuals with periodontal disease were selected and allocated to two parallel groups. Participants were randomized and submitted to different anesthetic techniques for pain control during non-surgical periodontal instrumentation: invasive anesthesia with a computerized device and noninvasive anesthesia with lidocaine gel and prilocaine 2.5%. Pain was assessed using the 11-point Numerical Rating Scale (NRS-11), and anxiety was assessed using the Modified Dental Anxiety Scale (MDAS). The need for anesthetic supplementation was also recorded. The volunteers had their hemodynamic parameters such as blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen saturation before and after the anesthetic techniques were measured by a multiparameter monitor. The anesthetic techniques showed similar results for pain, anxiety, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation. The number of top-ups and the heart rates were significantly different. The results suggest that lidocaine/prilocaine gel and computerized anesthesia can control the perception of pain during periodontal instrumentation, and both techniques are indicated for patients with anxiety.
