Abstract

The research aims to analyze the relationship between public television and politics in Mozambique, discussing how the interaction between these two systems influenced the sixth municipal elections held in 2023. The general objective is to examine the journalistic production process of the October 11, 2023, municipal elections, focusing on three political parties: the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo), the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), and the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM), as covered by Televisão de Moçambique (TVM). The empirical object consists of 108 pieces of content broadcast by the network within the Diário de Campanha Eleitoral (Electoral Campaign Diary) framework over a 12-day period in the municipalities of Maputo, Matola, and Nampula. The literature review involved a bibliographic survey of dissertations and theses addressing the intersections between journalism and politics, as well as legal frameworks regulating journalistic activity in Mozambique. This is a mixed-methods study that employs content analysis combined with interviews conducted with professionals involved in the production of TVM's content. The findings indicate an uneven coverage trend, as opposition parties were marginalized, appearing less frequently and with fewer attributes compared to the ruling party, Frelimo.
