Abstract

The objective of this work is to analyze the importance of clothing in the construction of the identity of three female characters of Machado de Assis: Capitu, by Don Casmurro; Virgilia, from Memorias Póstumas by Brás Cubas; and Guiomar, from The Hand and the Glove. We also intend to address the issue of gender in literature from another bias, in the case of fashion, as she, as is known, until today is an element that says who is who in society, often being able to cause of social exclusion, among other curses. That is, fashion deserves other looks, even within literature. From that budget, we went on to ask ourselves what details in the clothes or what Machado de Asís costumes covered Capitu, Virgília and Guiomar to build their identities? To what extent the clothes used and when described by the narrator, contributed, in that period of the work, to emphasize the gender identity of these characters? In this way, the interest in investigating the particularities of this social phenomenon is justified, which, above all, can be understood as a factor in the construction of the subject's identity and, just as in society, it is believed that we can also find examples in the literature that clothing can be an instrument of (trans) character formation. For the development of the work we conducted a bibliographic survey in the area of Fashion, Identity and Literature to base the analysis of the aforementioned Machadian characters with the purpose of investigating the possible relationships between their personality and the way they were dressed, looking to find out if their clothes played an important role in the construction of their identities. For the development of this study we have the theoretical support of authors such as Stuart Hall (2006), Roland Barthes (1979), Gilda de Mello and Souza (2001), Maria Alice Ximenes (2001) (2011), James Laver (1999), Diana Crane (2006), Daniela Calanca (2008), among others. These authors, and others who were not cited in this summary, directly or indirectly, directed their studies to issues related to fashion, identity and literature.
