Abstract

Probability allows us to describe random events that cannot be explained deterministically, such as weather forecasts, election polls, chances of winning lottery games, etc. However, it is noted that students generally have difficulty understanding it, whether it is presented through the mere application of formulas or in a decontextualized manner. In this context, a educational game called PRO-AHRIS was developed, with interdisciplinary input from the subjects of Mathematics, Financial Education, Agricultural Management, Animal Science Management, and Rural Administration and Economics, aimed at a technical course in Agribusiness. The general objective of this dissertation is to investigate aspects related to learning, motivation, and student engagement during the application of this educational resource. This is a qualitative, descriptive, field study, in which the data originated from the researcher’s observations and responses to a questionnaire answered by 19 students in the second year of a technical course in Agribusiness in the city of Castro, Paraná. The results showed potentially rich moments in terms of game-mediated learning, namely: the centrality of the student in learning mathematics, particularly probability; the development of individual social-emotional skills; potentially playful actions; the development of collective social-emotional skills; and the promotion of moments of socialization and dialogue. These characteristics reinforce the achievement of the objectives proposed by the PRO-AHRIS game, more specifically, because it is a multicultural game that reinforces concepts and encourages competition. As for the positive points, the students listed competition, motivation, contextualization, and fun. The difficulty of the questions and the lack of attention in listening and understanding them were the negative points mentioned by the students.. In addition, the game helped to elucidate the scope of probability in decision-making involving essential interdisciplinary elements in the profession of agribusiness technician.
