Abstract

Diabetic retinopathy is one of the main complications of diabetes mellitus. There is no treatment for early diabetic retinopathy, only glycemic control and comorbid control. Cilostazol is a possible therapeutic alternative. The purpose of this research was evaluate the protective effect of cilostazol administered by gavage on the development and evolution of diabetic retinopathy in rats inducing diabetes mellitus by intraperitoneal streptozotocin. Four groups of 15 animals were compared for 8 weeks. In two groups intraperitoneal streptozotocin was given for induction of diabetes mellitus .And two groups were maintained normoglycemic for control. After confirmation of hyperglycemia in these groups, one group of diabetic mice and one group without diabetes received oral cilostazol (30mg / day) for 8 weeks. After the treatment period the eyes were removed and one of them was intended for histological analysis. The thickness and core count of the retinal layers were compared. The group of diabetic rats treated with oral cilostazol (mean 3 ± 1 nuclei in 50 μm retinal) had a statistically lower (p <.05) loss of ganglion cells compared to the group of diabetic rats not treated with cilostazol (mean 4 ± 0 nuclei in 50 μm of retina). Furthermore, the remainder of the analyzes suggested a neuroprotective effect of cilostazol on other layers of the retina. This result points to cilostazol with a possible therapeutic option for diabetic retinopathy and other neurodegenerative diseases of the retina.
