Abstract
This thesis aims to understand how gender shapes the scientific field of Urban
Geography in Brazil, based on 936 Lattes curricula from 407 female and 529 male
researchers within the analyzed field. Science here is interpreted through Pierre
Bourdieu's perspective, as a field where power relations, hierarchies, and disputes
for scientific capital and the maintenance of scientific authority occur, while
professional activities and scientific productions are listed as strategies in the
disputes that take place within the field. The concept of gender is interpreted as a
social product established as a means for the hierarchization of people and the
division between men and women. After collecting the curricula, processing was
performed using the Python script Lucy Lattes, which separates data related to
general identification, journal publications, books, research and extension projects,
supervisions, and teaching courses, with data related to the agents' academic
background extracted in parallel, making the research verifiable and replicable in
other fields. From the data collected from the curricula, combined with information
received through the application of a questionnaire, the results indicate that, although
there is a growing presence of women in the field of Urban Geography, gender
inequalities still persist in different aspects. In this regard, there have been advances
in certain aspects, where in some moments a clear female superiority is identified, as
occurs in university extension, the number of female master's students supervised,
and the structuring participation of women in coauthorship networks. However, male
superiority also remains, as seen in the number of publications, the qualification of
journals with publications, and the number of male doctoral students supervised.
This indicates that there is a clear difference in the strategies used in the dispute for
scientific capital by the set of female and male researchers in the field of Urban
Geography in Brazil, as well as in the time dedicated to the analyzed field, which
leads us to reiterate that "gender matters".
