Abstract
Expanding teachers’ theoretical and methodological repertoire is essential for facilitating the recognition of indicators of high abilities/giftedness and for promoting inclusive teaching practices. This dissertation aims to analyze a body of knowledge on high abilities/giftedness that contributes to the development of a continuing education course for teachers focused on recognizing indicators of this condition in the context of the regular classroom. It adopts a translational research approach in education, combining literature review, document analysis, and educational design with qualitative analysis of data and indicators. It is based on the contributions of Joseph Renzulli, particularly the Three-Ring Conception and the Triadic Enrichment Model, in dialogue with the perspectives of Howard Gardner and Robert Sternberg. It traces a historical and normative overview of Brazilian public policies aimed at students with high abilities/giftedness and presents enrollment data for this population in Brazil and in Paraná. It also offers guidance for identifying these students and developing their potential within the regular classroom. The study used two questionnaires as research instruments, with a sample of 19 elementary and secondary school teachers holding master’s degrees in Education. The main outcome was the development of an educational resource in the form of a self-paced distance learning course titled “High abilities/giftedness: (in)formation for inclusion,” designed for teacher professional development. The resource was validated and evaluated based on participants’ assessments using a five-point Likert scale, yielding average scores of 4.70 for aesthetics and organization, 4.88 for content presented, 4.80 for methodology, and 4.53 for the course’s applicability and impact. The results indicated that the course has great potential for continuing education, with a view to increasing the recognition of high abilities/giftedness indicators, strengthening inclusive teaching practices, and contributing to the consolidation of a more equitable education system that values and develops the potential present in school settings. In this context, recognizing and developing potential is not a concession or a privilege, but rather a dimension of the right to education, requiring intentional mediation between academic knowledge, pedagogical practice, and institutional commitment.
