Abstract
The chronic systemic diseases are conditions notoriously known to affect quality of life
(QoL). Several articles point out that dentine hypersensitivity (DH) is also a condition
that affect QoL. Therefore, assessing whether there is an additive and synergistic
relationship between the two conditions becomes important. The objective of this study
was to evaluate the impact of DH on QoL in patients with chronic systemic diseases.
For this cross-sectional clinical study, volunteers were selected from a population with
chronic systemic diseases, who underwent outpatient follow-up at the Campos Gerais
Regional Hospital. After completing the informed consent, the volunteers completed
an anamnesis record and the Short Form – 36 (SF-36), Oral Health Impact Profile –
14 (OHIP-14) e Dentine Hypersensitivity Experience Questionnaire – 15 (DHEQ-15)
questionnaires. Clinical periodontal examination and DH evaluation were performed.
The evaluation of DH was carried out by evaporative and tactile stimulus, with the air
of the triple syringe and explorer probe, respectively. The pain intensity from the DH
tests was scored by the 11-point numerical rate scale and verbal rate scale. The study
included 252 volunteers (38% men and 65% women) with age of 50.0 ± 13.0 years. Of
the total individuals, 60% presented DH. The variables cardiocirculatory diseases,
respiratory diseases, smokers, number of teeth present and DH were predictive factors
for QoL. (P <0.05). It can be concluded that DH is a factor that negatively impacts QoL
of patients with systemic chronic diseases.
