Abstract
The emergence of multiresistant bacteria is a worldwide concern. Measures must be
taken in all sectors, not only in relation to the patient who needs to take antibiotics
due to illness, but also in the antibiotic prescriptions in animals that can trigger a
whole chain reaction of antibiotic resistance. The objective of this work was to
conduct a survey, based on an online questionnaire, with the veterinary doctors of
the state of Paraná, enrolled in the Regional Council of Veterinary Medicine, as
general or specific clinicians in the area of ophthalmology in order to address the
Ophthalmic casuistry and treatment of different conditions of ocular surface in dogs,
relating the methods of diagnosis and treatment. The results show the scarcity of
complementary tests such as cytology, culture and antibiogram for the correct
diagnosis of the diseases leading to the empirical use of antibiotics for the
treatments. The ophthalmology veterinarian specialists appreciate the correct dosage
and are cautious about the prescription of antibiotics when compared to the group of
veterinarians working in the general clinic.
