Abstract
The dissertation entitled ―Matemáptico: an assistive technology facilitating the use of the
soroban for students with visual impairments‖ is part of the Graduate Program in Inclusive
Education, Professional Master's Degree in Inclusive Education in National Network
(PROFEI), within the Research Line: Technological Innovation and Assistive Technology. The
study is situated within discussions on the teaching and learning process of students with visual
impairments, considering that their educational inclusion has challenged school environments
to develop new teaching approaches. In this context, the use of assistive technology has proven
to be fundamental to the sociocognitive development of these students. Based on this premise,
the research sought to answer the following question: What are the contributions of the assistive
technology Matemáptico in the teaching and learning process of using the soroban by students
with visual impairments? The general objective was to develop and evaluate an accessible (pre-
soroban) resource to facilitate the learning of the soroban by students with visual impairments.
The methodological approach was qualitative, applied in nature, involving students with visual
impairments assisted by the Pedagogical Support Center – CAPE, Professor Ielita Neves Cotrim
Silva, in Caetité, Bahia. Data were collected through interviews and analyzed according to the
proposal of Morais (1999). The results indicate that Matemáptico, with its accessibility features,
facilitated students’ understanding of the use of the soroban. Its main distinguishing feature lies
in its accessibility, which enables independent access to the device. In light of the effectiveness
of the developed resource, a protocol was created detailing the process of production and use,
with the aim of providing a complementary tool that contributes to inclusive educational
practices and supports teachers in making the teaching and learning process more effective and
enjoyable.
