Abstract

The concern for patient safety and quality of assistance is present today, since during hospitalization patients are exposed to the risk of the occurence of several adverse events, which can cause severe damage to their health. This research aimed to evaluate aspects related to patient safety culture in the perception of the health team of a university hospital, through the application of the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture questionnaire, which has 42 items divided into 12 dimensions. This is a descriptive, cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach. The instrument was delivered to professionals in the technical categories of nursing, nursing, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nutrition, physiotherapy, speech therapy, psychology, social work and residents of the respective areas, from January to March 2019. Of the 302 questionnaires answered, 283 were considered valid. The variables were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The dimension “Organizational learning and continuous improvement” obtained the highest percentage of positive responses (77.90%), being considered a strong area for patient safety. The main fragility was identified in the dimension “Non-punitive response to errors”, which obtained only 27.7% of positive responses. The majority of participants (59.7%) did not report adverse events in the past 12 months. However, 70.7% of the participants considered the hospital's security measures to be “very good”. It is concluded that the culture of patient safety in the institution has dimensions with the potential to become strengthened, therefore the dissemination of a non-punitive culture and the encouragement of open communication in the face of errors are important.
