Abstract
Introduction: it is known that selenium has a great effect on the oxidative stress of
cells, both systemic and mainly cerebral. Brain degeneration occurs from several
factors, both internal and external in the human body, one of them being oxidative
stress. Therefore, ways are sought to minimize the effects of these degeneratives,
with selenium as an important component in the body's antioxidative defense.
Objective: to analyze the effect of selenium in the brain of rats, analyzing serum
oxidative stress markers, including TIOL, TBARS and catalase as well as
immunohistochemical markers, including caspase-3, BCL-2, NFKB, COX2, GFAP,
CD68, in addition to the neural structural pattern, in HE slides. The standard of the
blood count and biochemistry were imposed, among them, the total cholesterol, HDL,
Triglycerides, TGO, TGP, total bilirubins and fractions, serum iron and homocysteine.
Methods: experimental study with 36 rats. Supplementation with selenium 0 mcg in
10 rats, with selenium 48 mcg in 10 rats and with selenium 96mcg in 10 rats for 6
weeks (42 days), and an autopsy and comparative evaluation of the values of TIOL,
TBARS and serum catalase were performed, as well as measurement of
immunohistochemicals, as well as blood count and biochemistry. Results: excluding
the statistic only in TBARS values, suggesting its antioxidant action. Among the other
oxidative stress markers, both serum such as TIOL and catalase, as well as
immunohistochemical markers, there was little variability in their measurements. As
well as an inexpressive result in the blood count and biochemistry. Conclusion: it is
observed that there was an improvement in TBARS levels, but in the other
measurements it was obtained derived from statistics. Questions are raised about the
dose used or the base and its bioavailability as points of influence on the oxidative
response, and it is necessary to continue the investigation.
