Gestão Bolsonaro na pandemia: um estudo sobre os discursos e enquadramentos dos portais G1, Clarín e El País

Abstract

This dissertation investigates the national and international journalistic coverage of the Bolsonaro Government’s performance during the pandemic. Considering the news as a representation of reality (RODRIGO ALSINA, 2009) and taking into account the lack of neutral discourses (BAKHTIN, 2004), it is intended to identify the discursive constructions and framings attributed by the journalistic media to the head of the Executive of Brazil, in order to answer the following question: “how was the Bolsonaro government represented by the national and international press during the pandemic?”. To this end, we resort to the intertwining of Framing Analysis (ENTMAN, 1993) and Discourse Analysis (ORLANDI, 2007) as methodological approaches and to the portals g1 (Brazil), El País (Spain) and Clarín (Argentina) as search objects. The overlapping between the methodologies in question takes place from the constructionist line shared by both and is conducted in a way in which the notions of frames and discursive formations become complementary when understanding that the frames identified through the AE have basic meanings that only can be observed in depth through a socio-historical perspective that detaches itself from linguistic limitations and observes the effects of meaning through specific devices, such as discursive formations. That said, it is valid to point out that the choice of the referenced portals is made due to the need to identify the journalistic representations of the Federal Government in a more comprehensive way - bearing in mind that international opinion interferes in the national political scene - and has as a criterion the index of audience and the location of its headquarters, given that the positions and value judgments may differ between a country that shares cultural, social and political traits similar to Brazil and a nation that does not have a similar journey. Finally, regarding the time frame for this dissertation, the months of April and October 2021 are chosen, when the CPI of Covid is installed and closed, episodes that mark the current management when investigating the omissions of the representative and his allies during the health crisis and are decisive for the unfolding of the political story that culminates in Bolsonaro’s defeat in the 2022 elections.
