Abstract
Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is a cariostatic agent capable of effectively stopping the
progression of active caries lesions in addition to preventing the development of new
lesions. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether the previous use of 38%
SDF to control caries lesions in deciduous teeth has an influence on the properties of
the adhesive interface of restorations using universal adhesive system and composite
resin performed in the immediate time (IM) and thirty days (30D) after product
application. The occlusal surface of sixty-four sound deciduous molars was subjected
to artificial development of caries lesions by the pH cycling model for 14 days.
Subsequently, the teeth were randomly divided into eight groups (n=8) according to
the following strategies and times: Group of teeth with artificial caries treated with 38%
SDF (IM and 30D), group of teeth with artificial caries treated with 38% SDF +
Potassium iodide (KI) (IM and 30D), group of teeth with artificial caries treated with
38% SDF without ammonia (IM and 30D) and group of teeth with artificial caries treated
with 38% SDF without ammonia + KI ( IM and 30D). After application, the samples from
the groups (IM) underwent a restorative procedure with a universal adhesive system
and composite resin. The samples from the groups (30D) were stored in artificial saliva
at 37 °C for 30 days to then receive the same restorative procedure as in the previous
groups. The following tests were performed: Bond strength (IM and 30D), qualitative
ultrastructural analysis by field effect scanning electron microscopy (FEG) (IM and
30D), mineral analysis by Micro-Raman spectroscopy and X-ray scattering
spectroscopy in energy (EDX) (IM and 30D). The values of bond strength (MPa) were
submitted to 3-factor analysis of variance and Tukey's test (α=0.05) and after, multiple
comparison with the Holm-Sidak method. The bond strength of auniversal adhesive
(self-etching mode) with previous application of 38% SDF tocarious deciduous dentin
was not influenced by the moment when the composite resinrestoration was performed
(IM or 30D); The use of KI after 38% SDF did not change the adhesion characteristics;
38% SDF solutions with or without ammonia resulted in similar bond strengths; The
adhesive interface of composite resin restorations after application of 38% SDF IM or
30D showed similar characteristics; The expression of calcium and phosphate was
identified at the tooth/restoration interface at IM and 30D time after DFP application,
however, in the latter there is a qualitative increase of theseions, compatible with
remineralization.
