A aventura da Bíblia no Brasil na segunda metade do século XIX.

Abstract

The insertion of protestantism in Brazil and its historical roots of consolidation of confessional proselytizing practices, has the dissemination of the bible as a central factor. Distribution carried out by street vendors of christian literature, the colporteurs, work primarily done by foreign missionaries and a posteriori also by brazilians. Nevertheless, the trajectory of the bible in this period has the majority support of biblical societies, american and british, imbued with making the bible accessible. It stands out in this context of religious freedom from the constitutional paradigm of 1824, a tension in the reports of the colporteurs in their travels through the cities and villages due to the opposition of the Roman clergy. The present dissertation will denote the vicissitudes faced by the colporteurs in the capitals and interiors of Brazil, hampered by the brazilian dimensions as well as precarious transport routes, which made the trips expensive, difficult and dangerous. In this sense, the text wants to address the pioneering adventure itself carried out by these street vendors, their representations and hidden permanences from their reports in the annual reports issued by these biblical societies, in the period from 1850 to 1900 and their biographies.
