Abstract

Given the benefits that skin contact and breastfeeding in the first hour of life provide for the mother and her newborn, it is necessary to know and understand the protective factors and barriers of these two practices. The aim of the study was to identify factors related to the practice of skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding in the first hour of life. It was a cross-sectional study, with a quantitative approach in a Teaching Hospital in southern Paraná, with the subject of the study, mothers and their respective NB in rooming-in, 24 hours after birth. For data collection, we used a semi-structured questionnaire with closed questions that addressed social, gestational, prenatal, labor, delivery, postpartum and newborn characteristics; a Breastfeeding Observation and Assessment form adapted as recommended by the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children's Fund, as well as some information was collected from the medical records. A total of 405 postpartum women participated in the study and of these, 281 made skin-to-skin contact and 333 breastfed within the first hour of life. Among the factors analyzed, some variables showed a significant relationship with skin-to-skin contact or breastfeeding, such as: guidance on skin-to-skin contact and guidance on the importance of breastfeeding right after delivery in prenatal care, non-pharmacological methods of pain relief in labor, type of delivery, place of birth, professional who attended the birth, position of birth, Apgar in the 1st minute, Apgar in the 5th minute, neonatal complications, breastfeeding before or after care by the pediatrician, maternal complications , use of complement, signs of difficulty in breastfeeding and guidance on skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding in the hospital. The importance of identifying the various facilitating factors and barriers related to the practice of skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding within the first hour of life was concluded, in order to be known by professionals, by the mother and her companion so that they encourage practices that collaborate in increasing the performance of essential care at birth, especially related to the first hour of life.
