Abstract
The aim of this study is to evaluate the perioperative discomfort of patients undergoing
tooth extraction procedures through the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Self-Perception
Questionnaire (QCirDental). The study was characterized as observational and cross-
sectional. The sample was composed of 432patients who underwent dental extraction
procedures. Where performed test -retest reliability, split-half reliability and exploratory
factor analysis. QCirDental was used to explore transoperative patient discomforts.
Anxiety and postoperative pain were self- scored. The study demonstrated the
reliability of the QCirDental questionnaire through test-retest (Cronbach’s Alpha .93)
and split-half reliability analyses (Spearman's correlations with the total score of the
QCirDental; First: r .92 p< .001; Second: r .92 p< .001). Three domains, namely
Physical Feelings, General Perceptions, and Feeling of Loss, were identified through
exploratory factor analysis. The Physical Feelings domain exhibited the strongest
correlation (Spearman's rho ~.95, p< .001) with the overall questionnaire score
implying that the questionnaire could be reduced to that set of 11 questions. The state
of anxiety showed association with Physical Feelings and Feeling of Loss domains
(Spearman's .29 p< .001 and; .1 p= .03). Surgical time (Physical Feelings and General
Perceptions; Spearman's rho: rs .21 p< .001; rs .21 p< .001 respectively), surgical
complexity (Physical Feelings and General Perceptions; Spearman's rho: rs .22 p<
.001; rs .20 p< .001), and volume of local anesthesia Physical Feelings and General
Perceptions; Spearman's rho: rs .23 p< .001; rs .1 p< .02) showed significant
correlations with patient discomfort. This research advanced in the validation process
of the QCirDental, confirming its reliability, validity, and stability as a measurement tool
for oral surgical discomfort. Variables such as prolonged surgical time, volume of local
anesthesia, self- declared anxiety, among others, were found to be related to the
QCirDental questionnaire, thus presenting significant correlations with patient
discomfort during these types of procedures.
