Abstract
Introduction: Wounds and skin ulcers are a challenge to health professionals, seeking each day new strategies for the wound therapy. The use of phytotherapeutic drugs has been increasing steeply in research, as well as the pursuit of associations, like the use of biopolymers with properties of adhesiveness, controlled release and protection to the wound site. Objective: Develop, characterize and evaluate the effectiveness of cross-linked membranes with mucilage from Ocotea puberula in wound healing. Method: formulation of reticulated membranes with carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with the mucilage extract of Ocotea puberula bark through hydroalcoholic extraction (EHOP); evaluation of compounds interaction with the EHOP by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), in vivo healing tests by experimental model in rats, histological evaluation of lesion fragments after 7, 14 and 21 days of injury and treatment and biochemical tests of nephro and hepatotoxicity. Results: It was observed the formation of transparent, malleable and stable membranes for applying in lesions, whereas CMC membranes increased by EHOP potentiated their mechanical properties, compared to PVA with the same extract. The CMC membranes showed better wound healing index in animal tests, as well as angiogenesis and collagenesis. Both formulations emonstrated safety regarding hepato- and nephrotoxicity in topical application. Conclusion: the use of cross-linked CMC membranes with EHOP showed a promising option in the treatment of exudative lesions, envisioning a new strategy for wound management in healthcare practice.
