Abstract

The aims of this study were to describe and analyze how the Brazilian female team and its players were represented in the Sports section of Folha de S.Paulo, between the years 1991 and 2016; as well as the visibility of the women’s soccer and its relationship with this team. For this purpose, the method called Content Analysis was used, as this is a guide for analyzing various types of discourses, among them the journalistic one. The results showed that the call-ups, the trainings and the matches were covered. The descriptions of these approaches emphasized the logic of training, the status and collective and individual identities, the disclosures and results of the matches, the players’ difficulties and their overlapping with men. Women’s soccer was published in 632 texts, the third sport with the most visibility among the 47 women’s sports that appeared, only surpassed by basketball (1290) and volleyball (2423). Based on these data, it is concluded that the focus of sports coverage of the newspaper is the individual and team performance, and not the players’ physical appearance, who are also not inferior to footballers. Women’s soccer is not hardly visible, and the period of greatest appearance of the sport, in the second decade of the 2000s, is related to the performance rise of the Brazilian team and the presence of idols and controversies in the team.
