Abstract
This study evaluated the effectiveness of a topical anesthetic (EMLA) in the prevention of pain during probing in chronic’s periodontal disease patients. Material and methods this is a randomized, double-blind, split-mouth and placebo-controlled clinical study .Thirty threepatients, aging 18 to 60 years, of both genders, were selected. Elegibility criteria: participants should have at least 5 teeth in each hemiarch, including a lateral incisor and a first molar; present sensitivity to probing and characteristics of chronic periodontitis, with periodontal pocket depth greater or equal to 5mm. The volunteers were submitted to anamnesis and periodontal probing to see if they met the inclusion criteria. For the probing, UNC-15 probe was used (Hu-Friedy, Chicago, IL, USA). Some arches teeth right left-hand dental arches were randomly evaluated, as one side received EMLA (AstraZeneca, Cotia, SP, Brazil), consisting of 25 mg / g of lidocaine and 25 mg / g of prilocaine, while the other side received a placebo gel with the same characteristics as the active gel, but without anesthetic effect. The the intensity of the pain was valuated using two scales: the Visual Analogue scale, where the patient assigned scores from 0 to 10 zero
represented no pain and ten represented the highest pain ever experienced by the patient) andthe 4-point verbal scale (VRS-4) where the patient should choose which of the alternatives best represented the pain he was feeling. The parameters were recorded and the data were compared using the McNemar exact test. The results did not show superiority of the EMLA when compared to placebo, however the research signaled that non-invasive topical anesthesia allows the performance of periodontal probing procedures in most patients without causing severepain.
