Abstract

The purpose of the study was to assess the efficacy of intraoral scanners in scanning single-root canals. The study analyzed the depth (mm) and surface area scanned (mm2) and compared two scanning techniques. The experiment involved ten human permanent single-rooted second premolars that were sectioned perpendicularly to their long axis and treated endodontically. The experimental groups were divided between the intraoral scanners, namely TRIOS 3 (n=10), MEDIT i600 (n=10), and PRIMESCAN (n=10). For each specimen, the canal was molded with acrylic resin, and each impression scanned with the scanner for each group to have a positive control. Before the scans, the samples were embedded in printed models to simulate the difficulty the operator would face in a clinical situation. Two scanning techniques were used: conventional, with rectilinear scanning movements, and oscillatory, with rotating oscillating movements over the entire piece to be scanned. The data was analyzed using repeated-measure ANOVA, with Tukey's post-hoc test for comparison between groups. The results indicated that the oscillatory technique presented greater scanning depth compared to the conventional one. The PRIMESCAN scanner obtained the greatest depths, especially with the oscillatory technique. Regarding the scanned surface area, the oscillatory technique showed greater effectiveness in all groups, while PRIMESCAN obtained a greater area in the conventional technique.
