Abstract
The HIV/AIDS epidemic is dynamic, with changes in its incidence, prevalence and
mortality. Risk behaviors, comorbidities and opportunistic diseases are related to this
infection, as well as the lack of adherence to the treatment, which contribute to the
increase of the mortality. The objective is to identify the epidemiological profile and
mortality trend in people living with HIV/AIDS, in the city of Ponta Grossa/PR, from
2008 to 2018. This is an epidemiological study of the time series type, whose data from
The mortality data were obtained from the Mortality Information System (SIM) and the
epidemiological profile was collected from the notification forms of the Notifiable
Diseases Information System (SINAN) and from the physical records of the
Specialized Assistance Service of the Testing and Counseling Center (SAE). /CTA),
population data were obtained from the Paraná Institute for Economic Development
(IPARDES). Linear regression was used to analyze the mortality trend and the
sociodemographic profile was described using frequency measures. It was observed:
higher incidence of deaths for males (64%), with age between 31 to 50 years (58%),
caucasian race (76%) and incomplete elementary education (25%). Most of the
transmission was through sexual contact. It is noteworthy that in only 22% of the cases
there was regular use of antiretroviral therapy and that in 65% of the cases the infected
lived less than 5 years. The main professional groups found were Housewives
(17.34%), followed by Extractive Industry and Civil Construction Workers (7.74%) and
Transport and Tourism Services Workers (7.74%). The mortality trend was variable
over the years of study, but when stratifying the period in 2008 - 2011 and 2012 - 2018,
due to the change in the Death Certificate forms for the year 2011, it was possible to
verify a significant growth trend for the first period (p = 0.0411) and an apparent
downward trend in the final years (p = 0.1681). The main underlying diseases that led
to death were in fact HIV-related diseases and among the main causes of death
reported are the Human Immunodeficiency Virus Disease - HIV (ICD-10: B24, 49% of
cases), the septicemia (ICD-10: A419, 23.53%) and pneumonia (ICD-10: J189,
15.17%). It is concluded that the HIV/AIDS mortality profile in Ponta Grossa is similar
to the national records with regard to sex, age group, schooling, treatment and
transmission, however, it differs in the tendency, sometimes increasing, sometimes
decreasing of mortality from this disease. cause.
