Abstract

This work developed an understanding of how the trajectories of young people within the hip-hop movement compose the urban landscape of Ponta Grossa - PR. Therefore, contact with the young activists (graffiti artists and rappers) who materialize their space-time trajectories through space was fundamental. Thus, the geographic science, through the concepts of space and place, offered paths to understand the materiality and the symbolism intrinsic to the construction of the landscape. The cultural and political aspect of the hip-hop movement was considered in terms of its origins and its insertion into the urban landscape. The landscape regarded as an image-based perspective of the geographic space was read as a text full of meanings that precede and succeed re-appropriations in public spaces. The structural bases of the investigation were complemented by an understanding of youth sociability and the trans-local aspect of the hip-hop movement. The participative observation and the field diary were constantly updated and complemented by narrative interviews, thus providing the information necessary to understand the social conditioners and to compose the central cores of the languages explored. The results of the research included the characterization and construction of the group identity, the identification of connection terminals and space-places of reference to the hip-hop presence, the transformation of spaces into places, and the complex symbolic sphere around the manifestations of the young activists. The perspectives around the materializations of the languages of graffiti and rap presented a number of meanings related to the lack of color in the city, escape from a monotonous daily life, and a social concern regarding the access to culture by people living in the outskirts of town, results that were a consensus among the activists. However, the anarchic perspective, of freedom, challenge and visibility is linked to the use of these languages as a tool of struggle for space, symbolically as well. The central cores and the material that they provided allowed to expose and explore the elements that constitute the identity of the movement, which through the trajectories and manifestations transform and resignify the space and, consequently, the landscape that reflects materiality and social order
