Abstract

This work makes a study about doubt and fear in the narrative of Riobaldo, an elderly ex-chief of jagunços, main character and narrator in the novel Grande Sertão: Veredas; flirting with philosophy, seeks to discuss the consequences of having a timorous narrator and with doubts. The hypothesis of this work is that doubt and fear throughout Riobaldo's speech are a guide to the narrative, since the awareness that Riobaldo is taken by fear from doubt and from doubts stemming from fear can provide an understanding different from the narrative; it is understood that, besides constituting a leitmotif of the monologue-dialogue of the jagunco, the doubts and fears experienced by the narrator-character are what lead his reasonings to the problematic of evil, morality, destiny and human freedom, that is , doubt and fear affect their perceptions and therefore their narrative and narrative choices. A second Hypothesis arising from the first is that the doubt felt by Riobaldo is also a discursive resource that he uses to get rid of some guilt and that the narrator jagunço opts for a state of suspended truth
