Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the effect of the addition of nanoencapsulated flavonoids in two universal adhesives used in a total-etch mode on the microtensile bond-strength (μTBS), nanoleakage (NL), and the characterization of hybrid layer in artificial caries- affected dentin (CAD). Material and methods: A microbiological method was used to create an artificial CAD in 60 human molars. Nanoencapsulated quercetin (Q) and naringin (N) were incorporated to Prime&Bond Universal (PBU; Dentsply-Sirona) and Single Bond Universal (SBU, 3M) and randomly allocated into 6 groups: 1) PBUC (control), 2) PBUN, 3) PBUQ, 4) SBU C (control), 5) SBUN, 6) SBUQ. A 4-mm thick block of resin composite (TPH Spectrum, Denstply Sirona) was built upon the flat bonded CAD surface and light-cured following the manufacturer ́s instructions. Specimens were sectioned into resin-dentin sticks (0,8mm2). A μTBS and NL tests were performed after 24 h (IT) and after 6 months of water storage (WS). In addition, the characterization of the hybrid layer was evaluated. The results were analyzed using non-parametric three-way repeated measures way ANOVA test with repeated measures followed by Bonferroni's post hoc test (α = 5%). Results: All flavonoids groups improved μTBS and NL values after WS (p<0.05). The Q group showed the higher μTBS values and lower NL values when compared to C. PBU showed higher NL values when compared to SBU after IT (p<0.05), and those values decreased after WS (p<0.05). Q and N were identified in the hybrid layer of SBU and PBU, as well as the adhesive infiltration. Conclusion: The use of nanoencapsulated flavonoids may improve the durability of the bonding interface created by universal bonding systems on CAD.
