Abstract

This research aims to analyse the images or black pelople in the English textbook Way to English for Brazilian Learners approved by the PNLD 2017 and used by some public schools of the state of Parana. Besides, it aims to identify how the representation of black people is constructed in images Theoretically, the study is based in the tenets of the Grammar of Visual Design (GDV) (KRESS; VAN LEEUWEN, [1996]2006) which approaches the visual semiotic mode based on the perspective of systemic-functional linguistics (HALLIDAY, 1978; 1985; 2014). The authors of GDV propose a system to analyze images according to the representational, interactional and compositional metafunctions. This research analyses images in the front page of the Unit 4, named Let’s Go to School and Unit 5, What’s a family? of volume 1 of the before mentioned textbook collection. Reflections regarding the black people representation in the English textbook are based on authors who discuss the issue (FERREIRA, 2014); (GOMES, 2003), among others. The methodology used in this study is quantitative and qualitative and the categories used for analysis are related to the GDV. The results indicate that there is a gradation in interaction among the images and that the compositional elements interact to present the Ethiopian school as the most distant from the reader and the one that builds less interaction. The images of the modern families represent the families of black people disempowered and disfunctional. These elements among others enphasize discrimination against black people and perpetrate a stereotyped vision of the black people in the English textbook. The results of this study contribute to emphasize the importance of educators so that the analysis of the imagetic mode become a constitutive process of pedagogical practices in order to contribute to value racial diversity as part of an equalitarian educational system.
