Abstract

Chronic kidney disease is a growing public health problem with high mortality rates; cases that progress to kidney failure are mainly treated with hemodialysis. This research sought to identify the clinical and laboratory impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on hemodialysis patients. To achieve this, the medical records of 407 patients who were on hemodialysis at Hospital Santa Casa de Ponta Grossa during the years 2018 to 2021 were analyzed. The research was submitted to the Ethics Committee and approved under opinion number 5,024,864. Statistical analysis was performed with the RStudio software, the methodology used was non-parametric and the significance level was set at 5%. The results were organized into five groups, laboratory tests, blood count, hemodialysis sessions, hospital care and survival analysis. In the pre-pandemic period, there was a greater number of hospitalizations and complications or events in hemodialysis sessions. The results from the period during the pandemic show a greater number of occurrences of hypotension during hemodialysis sessions and absences. The greater number of absences recorded during this period indicates a worsening of adherence to treatment during this period. Analysis of laboratory parameters indicates improvement in some parameters related to secondary hyperparathyroidism and anemia during the pandemic. Survival analysis showed no significant difference between patients who had and did not have COVID- 19.
